Cool… is there any news of an American release date in the source?
I can’t remember when they said it was going to be released in America, but I think it was around the holiday season because i was pretty upset about the late release date for such a simple piece of program…not to mention that Opera is based in America.
It shouldn’t be hard to import it if you’re willing to pay a few dollars extra.
I think by the end of E3, we’ll have a date.
I CAN’T wait for this one!!!
Just looked up an article, It was a link from Digg, says it’s coming out in America in December according to Nintendo Power. Long wait…gonna be around $30 as well I hear.
Opera is actually out of Oslo, Norway. Not America as Kyle randomly claimed.
Things keep looking better and better for nintendo, this is fantastic news - and a hell of a reason to buy a DS Lite.
This just sealed the deal. compact, and with wifi access gaming now with browser support. Greatest handheld ever.

Sleek design. And two screen browsing…COOL!
do u need a ds lite to use it?

Yes, a LOT of new members…
To “Kyle” above: No, Opera is not based in America. It’s based in Norway.
This just cinched it. Was planning on the DS lite simply for MArio but now with the browser? Forget about it, certainly best handheld available. Nintendo is now the Volkswagen of the toy comapny with Sony’s mercedes. Sure their sleek and cool and top of the line but VW has all the best features and it looks cool without you having to worry about every little scratch ya get on it

What about Flash support? For $30 I expect to be able to view IGN and other flash web pages.
To Doomheit
I am sure that we will have flash support, but for thirty dollars, that is a bargain. No extra payments, especially if your hotspot is McDonalds.
Not that that makes up for the PSP’s failures in other areas, but, for perspective, an official flash web browser is available on PSP for free.
I never even touched a PSP. It is such a disgrace to stores that they don’t have it on display like the DS.
The DS is going to be released June 11th for $129 USD. Have my pre-ordered already from EB.

Yeah, I know. I have that posted in the DS section.

To Apple Fanboy:
Most of the 20+ people I know (including 40+) prefer Nintendo. They understand TRUE gaming… which you are incapable of. Is Resident Evil four for 5 year olds? Or RedSteel, or Disaster? Go back to your Xbox, it is best for people of your low mentality. Ignorance is bliss, and you are the happiest person I know.
I like the design of the opera browser, I can’t wait until it comes out as well. But access-wise, the only thing I’m worried about is, will this only work for the hotspots and networks where you had to go through the process of setting up the DS wifi? The DS and the browser would be a lot of help to me while on my college campus to access their network without having to go to a computer lab and whatnot.
Will you be able to access email accounts like gmail from this? and will you be able to type email with the stylus and that keyboard? It would be a bit annoying, but no worse than thumbing out a message blackberry-style.
The person who says “Opera is based in America” is wrong.
Opera is actually a Norwegian software company.
I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it
I’m about to lose control and I think I like it
I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it
And I know I know I know I know I know I want you
I hardly play Nintendo nowadays. Maybe with one of these pretty integrated feature of having DS Browsers may interest me some days. For now, I’ll keep it simple.
Simple, elegant, and love the handwriting recognition.
Will it work in the UK, with an imported japaneese DS. Not lite. Dont see why the country thing will be a problem, but is it lite only?
[...] I’m astounded by Nintendo’s agility; their new Wii console looks killer, the Wii’s incredibly innovative controller is getting rave reviews, and the Virtual Console “iTunes Music Store for Videogames” looks hot and is confirmed to allow downloads from indie developers. Even their elegantly redesigned DS Lite portable is getting an awesome new Mario game and a killer web browser that takes full advantage of both the DS’s dual screens and lower touch screen. It’s so nice seeing both the press and the gaming community reward true innovation; lord knows, not every gaming company is currently taking such risks. [...]
For people wanting to access Gmail, http://m.gmail.com is the “PDA” interface. I should imagine if the regular version doesn’t work, this one will work just fine.

“Will you be able to access email accounts like gmail from this?”
————
Yes, you will. “Opera DS” has AJAX support (a technique that is used on GMail, Google Maps, etc. - you don’t need to reload or browse to a different page to get new information.) so it should be possible to visit GMail in the basic mode. Even if it wouldn’t work, there’s a version of GMail intended for old or unsupported browsers. If you want to see what it’s like, log into GMail, scroll down and click the “Basic HTML” link.
I sure hope that you’ll be able to type out messages with the stylus, though.

This is so cool, now we can play with our DS’s over Wifi Connection on password protected networks. Eh? I don’t have Wifi at home, but I do at college and at my job so this would really help me, by allowing to use these password protected networks that I am authorized to access, of course.
Hmmm… two currently clueless technology companies getting together. Can’t wait to watch the spectacular failure.

David- FYI you can play on password protected networks now. You put in the WEP key when you configure your DS game and tell it which network to use. If you’re just talking about web browsing on secure networks, I can’t imagine them leaving a similar secured option out.
[...] So what else has my blood pumping? Of course The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is a given (I’m a huge Zelda fan) but the last thing I’m going to drool over tonight is actually a new DS function - web browsing. This is gonna make the DS even more powerful and universally appealing - it’s only a matter of time before they make blank GBA cartridges to save pictures and videos on. Because they’re using Opera as their web browser, the DS should be able to view practically any website (hopefully this one too!). Wii will also use Opera software. Personally, I’ll still use Firefox but hey - at least they’re not opting for Internet Exploiter. [...]
Seems pretty Cool
If they bundled this with some PDA software then that would be excellent. It would then justify the reason why I NEED one of these. Although if google keeps making webapps like email and calendar and we can access those then I guess that would suffice.

No, Norway is Norwegian.
“Aww, why Opera and not Firefox?!”
Firefox may have the greater name recognition, but at least in my biased opinion, Opera is the better designed browser. We have spent considerable effort optimising the browser and that shows, especially for devices like Nintendo Wii.
(And yep, we’re headquartered in Oslo, Norway, but we’re an international crowd and have American offices. And Norway actually means “The Way to the North”.)

No. It would be for both DS handhelds.
If the release date for North America is December, what’s the release date for Japan? It better be soon, because I’m importing this as soon as I can.
Whoops, I have no idea why I assumed Opera was based in the US, I probably saw someone else saying it and took it as fact. Stupid me, sorry guys.
Take your meds?
*Gives DSguru his meds* Wow this is alot of pills man! Its like eating breakfast!
yo apple boy the psp and microsft aren’t exactly the coolest thig either but compared to aple software they kick their buts.i’m getting a ds lite the ice blue if i can get my hands on 1 june 11th and the opera browser is a genius idea to put in video games in my opion.rock on nintendo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if the browser is coming out for the wii, then how will you type with it? if you had to use the d-pad to select the letters, i wouldnt buy it. it would be too annoying and time consuming. if you pointed at the censor with the controller and the cursor would move with it, then it would be alright.
P.S.-
Apple fanboy is a retard. if you have enough time to look at nintendo themed websites then you must be bored with your stupid other system. so why dont you just go play your pathetic little xbox, or go buy one of those colossal wastes of money that you call a PS3.
does anyone know what web cache it will have (if it has one) and does it have a built-in POP email client?
geez, i saw some hate between xbox x sony x nintendo. i have an xbox360 and intend to get a ps3, which will NOT be a waste of money. you one-console d-bags need to get over -…
Note from SirVenom:
Watch it, we want the comments to be appropiate for everyone…
who said that the PS3 is crap? (I will say that the the Xbox 360 is a lagging piece of **** ^^ eg. Oblivion)
Lol, I’m prety sure apple fanboy is just a joke. Some guy who has nothing better to do just makes some random post, ignore it. ( prolly even a sony fanboy )
Yeah, Apple buying out Nintendo seems surreal to me…But to get back on the subject, the DS Browser should be interesting. Nintendo seems to be at last into the internet market.
Confirming our original report, the Opera Web browser add-on has been confirmed for DS. In addition to this, the browser will not be firmware. It is also now known that the forthcoming Nintendo DS web browser will fully utilize the properties of the portable device. Web pages on the DS will span both screens of the handheld, with the touch screen functioning for forms of input. The browser will also fully recognize stylus movements associated with the touch screen in order to adjust the viewing angle of the bottom screen.
The Opera software is currently slated to release in Japan during the month of June at the price of 3800 yen, roughly $30, and will include ATOK Kanji conversion software. duaaaaaaaaaaa
will it be able to support flash or macromedia or some other sort of shockwave downloadable?
I was wondering if anybody knew what this would cost??
no actully it isnt that hard once u get the hang of it its like a cell phone. by the way im not using my psp to type this message im using my sidkick 2 which kicks both the ds and the psp

Sweet Add-On, When On The PSP, You Already Think It’s Gonna Be A Good Browser, When In Fact, You Have To Input Every Website In The Input, Then See If It Connects, And Only Some Websites… Now Thank Lord I Bought A DS Lite… And Same As Previous Comments…It Just Cinched It As Well. Can’t Wait For This To Come To The Americas So We Can Easily Sit Down And Look Up A Site With Our Stylus, Then View The Entire Site On TWO Screens. Great Program Opera. Keep Up The Good Work!
hey lord wii that crap is not true about the psp. almost all sites work and you only have to connect once when you go on the browser. also you dont have to put the website in the box to get to any site, you can set a homepage and have bookmarks.

thats nice for the ds lite.
there also coming out with the tv tuner for the ds it lets you watch tv i think its wi-fi enabeld too so nintendo ds will be the greattest hanld held system
even with the new games that will come out.

Re. Java, I guess no-one knows?
Hello. I have some questions…
Can you tell me if HTML files can be transfered from your PC to the DS for offline web browsing via the Opera browser?
get more pictures and seperate them so i can tell which screen is which(top, bottom)
ohhhhhhh man… some of it might be in jap jap but this is really helpful

hey i was wondering if you need a wifi conection to get online on nintedo ds i dont think the ds is coming out in december!!!!!!
if you have Broadband but no Wi-Fi you’ll need Nintendo’s USB Wi-Fi adaptor.
dude….mr DJR guy, the ds is already out.what planet have you been living on for the past year?
I just saw the release of the Opera browser was released, guessing we can import it and use it? Or do we have to wait for the American Release??
http://www.play-asia.com has it for 49.95 USD
you have to wait for it to come out in america… useually if u import foreign things for a U.S. system they’ll get messed up.
well the ds is region free…
Hmmm, I like the idea of using the stylus and handwriting recognicion, but it might be a bit of a let down if the browser doesn’t support at least flash, if not shockwave (being able to show 3D graphics) and/or flash.
Also, I think that the TV Tuner which someone mentioned will have a small areal, (I know I spelt it wrong)instead of wi-fi enabled.
Edit: …doesn’t support al least flash, if not shockwave and/or java.
yes the DS is region free, but thats not what im saying, im saying that the imported DS browser isnt, besides, youll have to read all that crap in japanese if it doesnt have a language option
yeah… the flash and java thing…im willing to wait a year or two untill thats enabled on the browser before i buy it, i mean if you go to nintendo.com you’re still not going to be able to view half the stuff thats on there
is anyone sure that the web browser will come to america in december?
will anyone answer
i know of one website that you can import japans ds browser for $50 and shipping is free
lik-sang.com
I would be prepared to wait a year for java.
And pay slightly more
But I still cannot wait
nobody is entirely (emphasise…entierly=100% sure) sure that it will come out in december but that is the most likely release
…P.S. ….Foamy rulez
america that is
…….not foamy rulez america…..it might be coming to america in dec
just makin that clear
Thanks phenom for the clarification thats what i was looking for earlier
Anyone know if it comes with ability to change to western letters
ummm…. i dont think that there will be a mic-word coming with the browser…..and its phenomenon not phenom….quit plain streetball

I’ve been a nintendo fan for years, i’ve seen nintendo get plowed by playstation and microsoft. but i always knew nintendo was up to some thing and bam!!!!! here it is the wii and the DS. now expect the callabo. nintendo was third for far to long now nintendo strikes back. also with the ps3 delay and the lack of ps3 available at launch! i think sony is doomed it’s over sony it’s over nintendo will take back it’s throne and crown and have the world saying Wii
will it be able to support flash or macromedia or some other sort of shockwave downloadable

Guys, I got specs all about it. It does have a December release date. But the browser cannot play Flash documents, movies, and music. I heard it takes a while to load a page (as I read from the UK’s IGN website. So, this browser’s gonna be cool, but it won’t be compatible with some content. It’ll be a little like running internet off of a version 1 Windows 95 with a generation 1 Pentium processor (which I am not using right now! [whistle]). However, I am just as eager as all of you are.
