Super Monkey Ball Helps Doctors! May 24, 2006
Plenty of medical research has proven the positive and allegedly negative effects videogames have on humans mentally and physically, but this is the first time we’ve heard data showing surgeons performing surgical drills faster and with fewer mistakes thanks to rocking a videogame immediately prior.CNN was handed the study before its official release this afternoon, lead investigator Dr. James “Butch” Rosser had 303 medical professionals engaging in 20 minute sessions of Sega’s Super Monkey Ball before a series of surgical drills based on laparoscopic surgical procedures that feature small video camera inserted through tiny incisions. We’re apprehensive to start trusting a researcher nicknamed “Butch,” but let’s give James the benefit of the doubt here.Medical mistakes are estimated to cause more than 100,000 accidental deaths annually. Rosser’s experimental surgeons completed their drills 11 seconds faster than others, not to mention any mistakes made were corrected faster.
