Remember Atari June 29, 2006

I first had a Colecovision.  Okay, so that really isn’t Atari.  Well, let’s reminscence on video game stardom.

On this day, June 27, 1972, a fellow named Nolan Bushnell founded a little company named Atari. A term from the traditional Japanese game Go, Atari roughly translates into “you are about to be engulfed.� And engulfed we were. Atari was the first videogame company to become a household name. And while the current Atari is, at best, a pale reflection of a once triumphant king, the name will forever be remembered as the almighty overlord of the first generation of our industry.
Much has already been written of the company’s history, so we won’t retread it here. Instead, we’ve selected anecdotes and observations from folks in the industry — and a few IGN editors — to take us down Nostalgia Lane and remember the company that started it all.
