Gamestop Being Shipped 750,000 Wii Units at Launch August 17, 2006
I think the Wii is supposed to ship 2 million units at launch worldwide, so 750,000 Wii units at Gamestops in the states seems like too big of a number. Maybe I am wrong.
Next-Gen sat in on a Q&A with Gamestop VP and CFO David Carlson. During the talk Carlson explained why retailer Gamestop hadn’t been taking pre-orders for the upcoming consoles yet.
“…We’re looking at around a million units of PS3 in the US, which is somewhere around half or less than what Sony has said [would ship worldwide]. With the Wii, we’re looking at around 750,000 in the US. We believe at this point, that could be a light number. It’s hard to say, though. We remain conservative until they actually show up at our warehouse.”
Both of the numbers Carlson provided are estimates and the company anticipates expected shipment figures from Nintendo this month with Sony’s estimates following at a later date. Once Gamestop has an idea of allocations it will receive, it will then look toward taking preorders. Gamestop wants to avoid a repeat of the excessive preorders and subsequent shortages that plagued both the retailer and Microsoft during last fall’s 360 launch.
