Congrats, Nintendo, on having their 2 millionth user join the Wi-Fi community!

Nintendo wants online gaming to spur software sales. Whether or not that’s working requires further study, but Nintendo is getting plenty of online players.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logged its 2 millionth unique user late Thursday night, accomplishing the milestone in just over nine months since the service’s launch last November. In that time, players engaged in over 70 million game sessions.

“Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection continues to set the standard for easy, fun and safe wireless gaming,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Our hand-held leadership will continue unabated with today’s launch of Star Fox Command and the anticipation of our upcoming Wi-Fi titles.”

The new entry in the Star Fox series is joined by the recently released, Wi-Fi compatible Tenchu: Dark Secret to bring the number of online DS games to eight. Nintendo’s Wii will also use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for online play, along with WiiConnect24 for other downloadable services.
