• Woman, 28, dies of water intoxication, assistant coroner says
• Radio contest required drinking large amounts, not voiding
• Victim was trying to win video game console for her children

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

“She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad,” said Laura Rios, one of Strange’s co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. “She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her.”

CNN article on this (again, only reporting negative news about the Wii)

How stupid can these radio stations be?

I don’t think the news was only reporting the bad things about the system.. it was reporting the news. And this bit of news had very little to do with the system. But there’s more to the story.. More than likely the family can take action agaisnt the radio station, because the death was due to their contest…..

    But it’s really sad..

What a crappy way to go :(

Anyway, if the radio station had any sense, these contestants would have signed a waiver. That isn’t to say that there won’t be any consequences for them, but there are two important things:

    1. She did it of her own free will
    2. Not everyone in the contest died

IANAL, but I think that means the radio station probably isn’t responsible. They *should* at least try to make good and spend some money on those kids.

    @Corey

Apparently this isn’t uncommon, I can recall hearing at least 2-3 cases of this. I think it was from Frat initiation…

I remember a decade or two ago a lady forced her son (2 or 3 years old) to drink two gallons of water because he kept waking her in the middle of the night asking for water. The kid died the next morning.

The radio station will probably shell out some $$$ just to make ammends even though it really wasn’t their fault. How sad for some kids to lose their mom that way.

    May she rest in peace.

I wonder if the radio station’s lawyers consulted doctors before running this contest. They probably didn’t think it could have these tragic consequences.

  11. Gravatar AJ Says:

One more thing (I sound like Steve Jobs, LOL).

The lady is CRYING and said her HEAD HURTS REAL BAD and they let her go home without offering help?

How defensive can you get, claiming CNN is “only reporting bad things about WII”? WTF? I read nothing in there about the stupid system, just that a radio station encouraged some stupid behaviour and a young mother who was trying to do something for her kids is now dead. Show some respect.

Omg ya i remember hearing this a couple weeks ago when they started the contest on the radio. at first i was like i should totally enter. but i never got to it, good thing. i just heard about the death today and the Morning rave(the morning talk show group) along with 10 other people that were there were fired. I loved listening to them, they were hilarious and was a great way to start out my morning. Later in the day when it was going to an end they talked to her and she said she had a huge headache and they offered her concert tickets to quit, but she said no,then she finally gave in and got the tickets. Unfortunatly she couldn’t go to the concert. :( well these things happen, nto very often, but they do happen.

[...] After Jennifer Strange’s death in ‘Hold Your Wee for a Wii‘, contest led by Sacramento’s KDND 107.9 Radio Station, to win a Wii, ten people have been fired to this point. Though the names of the fired employees have not been released yet, it seems like the owner of the station, “Entercom/Sacramento”, is trying to settle this issue as quickly as possible and handle any loose ends. The Army has actually been dealing with this for a number of years. Had some trainees die in the late 1990s due to water intoxication from being forced to drink water to prevent dehydration. It actually involves an electrolyte imbalance. Sad really.

I hope her kids are happy with their new Nintendo system.
