Don’t Buy Wii Points at Microplay January 16, 2007

MicroplaySo, I live in Canada and I noticed that whenever I went to buy a Wii points card at a store they charged me 24.99$. I had 20$ in my head because that’s what they charge in the states and of course everything you read is, well.. written to an American audience.

I did some calling around and from what I understand 24.99$ is the basic price for a card in any shop, although Microplay seems to sell them for 29.99$. I know, I thought that was a little high too, so I asked the Microplay employee to check it again and she confirmed it.

So… my advice is to avoid Mircoplay if you’re going to buy Wii Points. I still like to check out Microplay for used games. Now that I think about it, I could probably buy a Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo and a few games for less than 29.99$ at Microplay. Maybe I should look into that? What do you guys thinks? Are these Wii points too expensive? Or is it worth the convenience of having those awesome old school titles right there on your new school gaming machine?

Why don’t you just buy it through the Wii Shopping Channel and eliminate the middleman?

I have a slight problem with buying NES games for so much money when I’ve been playing them on my DS, PC, and Dreamcast for years. Don’t get me wrong I still have purchased a few games from the VC, but I got spoiled by having ALL games in each consoles library at my disposal.

One downside of ROMS that I found out is that since I had SO many games, I would play a game for a few hours then just stop because I knew I had SO many more games to choose from. So, in a way purchasing a game makes it more “important” to you.

I often use this comparison when I talk to people about this.

Back in 1996 I used to take a lot of photos of live bands. I used a camera with film. And I could usually only afford 1 or 2 rolls of film and have them developed, so I would make sure my shots were carefully taken.

A few years later I got my first digital camera and took hundreds of shots, usually not concerned if it was the “best shot”.

So when I look at my physical photos, they are all pretty decent. When I look at my digital photos, I’ll have hundreds of “bad” shots and a few good ones…

It’s almost like less is more…

Maybe I’m crazy. Not sure if that just made sense, haha

considering that in Australia the price of an N64 game in the Gametrader store is $12.95 and on the VC it costs $12.50 I find the VC too expensive. The reason being that even after I pay for a VC game I don’t OWN it.

Considering the ease of ROMs as back-ups and the current pricing of getting these great games used, it just seems natural to turn the other way when it comes to the v.c. Sure it may be more of a hassle, but you can literally find a system with an impressive library of games at a garage sale for the price of two N64 games on the v.c.. Nintendo should either drop there prices or make Wii Points earnable one way or another (star system anyone?). I refuse to pay another 10 bucks for a game I’ve already payed 40 for at some point in my life…

I don’t see why you would buy a game you already own anyway. :P

I support emulation quite a bit, so the only VC titles I’ll get will be those that would be more of a hassle to play on an emulator. Some N64 games may fall into this category and some multiplayer games from other systems will too because I don’t have 5 USB pads lol (hence why I bought Bomberman 93 though it is sitting in my rom folder as I type).

Anyway back to the article, I just bought my points through the shop channel with my debit card. ;)

You can play ROMs on the Wii if you know how.
Suburbia, I definately get your point. I find I do that myself a lot as well. With a digital camera I only focus on taking pictures, with my old camera I focused on only taking good pictures worth taking. And it’s the same with ROMs, when I was heavy into that I would play games for one maybe two hours and then move on to the next one, which of course in hindsight was not a good idea. I believe I have not once finished a game that I had as a ROM running with some Emu.
I believe the VC has to come down in price a bit, not much, cut a quarter and I’ll be happy.
On another note I believe you need a credit card to buy the points directly from the Wii Shopping Channel? Not everyone has got one.

Yeah, I know it’s overpriced but if you get the points through the shopping channel and get a few games to add as channels of their own, it’s definitely worth the convenience, especially for the NES, TurboGrafx and Genesis games when you can just turn the controller on its side and keep going.
