Ten KDND 107.9 Employees fired after Jennifer Strange’s Death January 17, 2007
After Jennifer Strange’s death in ‘Hold Your Wee for a Wii‘, contest led by Sacramento’s KDND 107.9 Radio Station, to win a Wii, ten people have been fired to this point. Though the names of the fired employees have not been released yet, it seems like the owner of the station, “Entercom/Sacramento”, is trying to settle this issue as quickly as possible and handle any loose ends.
Many rumors have arisen around the contest, including one that a nurse called the station to warn that what they had the contestants doing was very dangerous.
All that’s left to do is expect that this is solved as fast as possible for the sake of Jennifer’s family.

One of the moring news shows (Early Morning, Today, etc) had a recording of the call to the radio show from a nurse warning them about death by water intoxication. The response was something like - We know, we had them sign a waiver so we are not responsible. Additionally the contestants never heard that call.
i bet the nurse call is a fake. I think the first concern a nurse would have would be bladder related. I do feel for the family. it’s a tragic loss. I too lost my mother at a very young age. so i can relate to what they feel. but i also feel for the 10 people that got fired for this. i bet not all of them were directly related to the contest. it’s sad indeed. hopefully this will be resolved soon and efficiently…
The morning show I listen to here in Atlanta reported the story this morning. Get this, she actually said the name of the contest Hold your Wee for a Wii then followed that up with, “it was a contest where you win a play station 3 or something”.
C’mon. Give me a break.
I knew this would happen. A lot of people are calling this woman “stupid”, among other things, but the reality is that the radio station needed to be sure the contest was safe. All this “waiver” stuff is nonsense and easily beat by lawyers in court.

This same thing happened 2 years ago in Chico, California. Only, they were stupid frat boys torturing some pathetic soul that felt he didn’t belong unless he earned it with pain. I feel bad for the loss of the family, but I also understand that you gotta be pretty stupid to drink enough water to kill yourself… if you want it that bad, go get a credit card and go into debt 250 bucks. Are there really THAT many people out there that aren’t aware that you can drink too much water? Seems like everyone and their great grandmother goes through sex-ed in school, why don’t they spend some time teaching people about the dangers of excess?…
mack, because in america, we seem to think of gluttony as a virtue. and AJ, i dont think she’s stupid, but she cant have been a genius. i mean, right after you win or loss, PEE, for god’s sake, PEE!!
If the dangers of water intoxication really was common knowledge then this contest would have never been held. The radio station’s lawyers would have none of it.
Isaiah, regarding the pee stuff, it is my understanding that if your brain is swelling then perhaps the signal to go pee may not get delivered. Perhaps the headache took priority in her brain?
Yeah.. think about this: You have no knowledge of water intoxication, you come from a contest drinking too much water, and you get a REAL bad headache… what would you do first? go pee or worry about your head?
Obvious answer.. at least to me.. :S
The nurse call is true. When the dj was told by the nurse that the contestants could be seriously injured from taking in this much water, his responce was: they signed a disclamer, we are not responsible. If you don’t believe me, go to this website, read the article and watch the video.

A.J. Unfortunately, not every contest held by radio stations are filtered by lawyers. Also, a lawyer may not know the medical dangers any more than the D.Js did. I first found out about the dangers of drinking too much water when teenage students began doing it a few years ago. Being that I’m a high school teacher, I was surprised to hear about this. Kids were dying due to them trying to get what they called a “water high”. All these D.Js had to do was five minutes worth of research on the internet to figure out the extreme danger in their contest. I feel terrible for everyone involved, especially the family of Jennifer Strange.
What most people don’t understand about water intoxication is that the amount of water consumed to produce a fatal affect is individual. As little as .48 gallons (less than 1/2 a gallon) can be fatal to some. Peeing does NOT correct the electrolyte imbalance or “cell implosion” that can be triggered.
What will ulitimatly make the radio station liable is the fact that a nurse DID call and warn of the danger (this call was NOT heard by the contestants) AND the interns at the radio station were giving medical advice when this woman began to exhibit “classic” sypmtoms of water intoxication…she was told that her body would force her to vomit before her health was in danger (this is absolutly incorrect).
Let’s remember that this mom of 3 was simply trying to bring some joy to her children as any mother would. She was a good mom….I am certain that had she been fully informed of the risk she was taking…she would have chosen NOT to participate. And for that the radio station is completely liable.
Be certain that this will probably be the end of “risky” radio contests.
DOWN WITH COOMMUNISM……FILTHY PEOPLE……ZOOO PEOPLE!!!
It’s digusting to think how little research the radio station did before holding this contest. They knew it was dangerous but they didn’t know to what extent. I just hope the station gets prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The point needs to be made that safety should be the number one concern when hosting a contest of any kind.
that’s some b s. im glad they got fired and i hope they will never go into radio broadcast again, no one should be treated like an animal for a stupid game. and they way these stupid radio personals were acting just dissapointed me even more. i am deeply sorry for the lose of jennifer strange my heart deeply goes out to her family espically the kids. god is with you and so is she . god bless the strange family !!!!
