FFXI, not on Wii because of Friend Codes February 2, 2007

Filed under: News — José Colina @ 12:16 pm

It’s no secret to any of us, that we’ve had a lot of trouble with those nasty Friend Codes Nintendo are using to manage online play, first it was the pain of having a different code for every DS game we have.

With the Wii, seems like Ninty was a little bit closer to what customers wanted, and well, they made Console Friend Codes, so we would only need one friend code for all of our games.. Still it wasn’t perfection, but it was less painful… When it was announced that Pokemon Battle Revolution would have it’s own friend codes, those DS codes memories came back… Many say this is Nintendo’s way to digg it’s own grave in online gaming…

Now, what about Square-Enix??.. The Senior VP of the company, Hiromichi Tanaka, kinda feels like all of us, and during an interview with Cubed3, he said, that Ninty’s codes system is what is holding Square Enix back from bringing online gaming to the Wii (seems like Final Fantasy XI was in their plans). He claims that the company is currently in talks to resolve that issue.

This means that many speculations of FFXI hitting the Wii are very unlikely now, even with the support the company has given lately to Nintendo, this fact will remain untold until the friend code system has been resolved.. Let’s just hope that Square execs can talk some sense into Nintendo and can have their own logging system so we can have many great MMO’s on the Wii…

If Nintendo does really drop the ball on this whole online gaming doohickey, I’ll be terribly dissapointed.

However, I don’t think missing out on ANOTHER port of Final Fantasy XI will really make it worse.

Yeah.. but all this Friend Code stuff only makes harder to have MMORPGs on the Wii.. at least at my opinion.. :S

Its like nintendo has a mental block when it comes to online gaming! The consumer wants it so give it to us already dammit!

Pokemon Battle Revolution has it’s own friend codes because it the Wii and DS version work together.
They are still officially working on “Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers” for the Wii, so don’t worry if you actually like this game, because if that sells they’ll bring XI most definately.
The Wii’s friend system is not bad, it’s supposed to make it harder for dipshits to add you, that you don’t know. If a Wii title uses the online system it can use the codes already in the Wii or if it feels necessary implement another system.
I believe Elebits automatically imports your friends and such? It’s not out in Europe so I can’t know.

Tanaka looks like he’s going to kick some Nintendo tail in the pic…YOU GO BOY!

Hahahah he does seem like kicking ass :).. anyway.. I know the friend codes are to protect from baddies, but there could be a system for older people, so we don’t have to deal with friend codes and we can have normal nicknames or something like that :S

The issue wasn’t the friend codes, but rather the lack of a big enough HDD on the Wii. You’re article is misleading.

OMG FFXI better be on Wii that would be GODLIKE

friend code = no lawsuits for nintendo but hinders online gaming badly. a usb hdd wii be made for the wii in the future so worry not. nintendo cant afford not to comply, they want to stay in the clear and give us online at the same time, hard to do
