An industry analysis, David Cole of DFC Intelligence has suggested that the “DS has the potential to be the best-selling interactive entertainment platform ever.â€? He also added that at the current rate the DS and PSP are selling, handheld consoles could surpass the install base of the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 by 2011.

Witnessing the insane demand in the DS over the past few years makes this prediction very plausible. The DS has sold approximately 40 million consoles in last 2 ½ years since it’s release. But it has a long way to go to be #1. The Playstation 2 has an install base of somewhere between 110 and 120 million (different sources site different figures) achieved over the last 7 years.

Of course I know what Wiinintendo readers will say! Wii has already sold 6 million in the last 4 to 5 months alone. Why not estimate that it be the best selling console of all time? Well, given the longevity of the Gameboy I’m sure we’ll see the DS go through a similar evolution. Consider this; the Gameboy was born in the age of the NES (released in 1989). It still survives today and was going full force even after the DS was released. Why would the DS not share a similar career?
