In November of 2005, Nintendo dipped its toe into the pool of online gaming, with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on the DS. Since then, the online service has reached over 5 million users worldwide and those users have accumulated a whopping 200 million game-play sessions. About 65 DS titles support the Wi-Fi feature, and according to Nintendo, the 5 best sellers (in no particular order) are Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Metroid Prime Hunters, and despite the recent release, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.
“Nintendo DS gamers globally use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as an easy, fun place to find fellow players, all without paying anything extra for the service. The milestones represent millions of hours of fun and camaraderie despite miles between players,” explains the name-taker himself, Mr. Reggie Fils-Aime.
Other numbers continue to grow. In April of this year alone, the dual-screen system came out victorious, with 470,000 units sold in the US, an average of 16,000 a day (NPD Group). With its innovative features and game-play, the DS has also broken the walls of the typical gaming community. In less than 18 months, DS sales have jumped 42% among women, 127% in people between the age of 30 and 34, and 212% among people 35 or older (Nintendo).
