Sound Familiar? May 31, 2007

Filed under: Fanboy, Videos — Kalbi @ 5:20 pm

Here’s some background. These two chums are a shamisen-playing duo in Japan, called the Yoshida Brothers. Sound familiar? It should. This song is called Kodo. A remix of the song is used in the Nintendo Wii commercials in America. The ending sequence in each of the Wii commercials is based on the remix’s name, “Into the Sun”.

Interesting, huh?

Nintendo DS Online Reaches 5 Million Users

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Online — Kalbi @ 12:38 am

In November of 2005, Nintendo dipped its toe into the pool of online gaming, with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on the DS. Since then, the online service has reached over 5 million users worldwide and those users have accumulated a whopping 200 million game-play sessions. About 65 DS titles support the Wi-Fi feature, and according to Nintendo, the 5 best sellers (in no particular order) are Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Metroid Prime Hunters, and despite the recent release, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.

“Nintendo DS gamers globally use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as an easy, fun place to find fellow players, all without paying anything extra for the service. The milestones represent millions of hours of fun and camaraderie despite miles between players,” explains the name-taker himself, Mr. Reggie Fils-Aime.

Other numbers continue to grow. In April of this year alone, the dual-screen system came out victorious, with 470,000 units sold in the US, an average of 16,000 a day (NPD Group). With its innovative features and game-play, the DS has also broken the walls of the typical gaming community. In less than 18 months, DS sales have jumped 42% among women, 127% in people between the age of 30 and 34, and 212% among people 35 or older (Nintendo).

Ubisoft on Wii: “We Made Mistakes” May 30, 2007

Filed under: Fanboy, First Look — hey_suburbia @ 5:42 pm

ubi logoPublisher Ubisoft was one of the first third parties to recognize the potential of Nintendo’s Wii console and back the platform with a wealth of titles. The company’s headlining launch games, Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids, were both exclusively created for Wii and have in the six months since they released each become million-sellers around the world. However, many of the developer’s other efforts - all of them quick and unimpressive ports of previously released games on other systems - have faired poorly both from a critical and retail perspective. In an interview with leading German news magazine Spiegel, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and European head Alain Corre admitted that the publisher was too quick to rush these titles to the market.

Remember these screens!  Red Steel, you could have been the Wii’s GoldenEye 007

“We made mistakes,” they told the magazine. According to Spiegel, Ubisoft wanted to be first to capitalize on Wii and in its haste to release product it sacrificed the quality of the titles. Ubisoft has reportedly learned from its mistakes, though, and is promising that the quality of its forthcoming Wii projects will be significantly better.

9 minutes of Mario Strikers Charged May 29, 2007

Filed under: Exclusive, Fanboy, First Look, News, Online, Videos — hey_suburbia @ 11:00 pm

I had my Wii hooked up to the computer, and decided to put up 9 uncut minutes of gameplay.

It’s hard playing on a small laptop screen! I would have won that match. Basically, I just wanted everyone to see the interface, menu options, WiFi, and an entire match.

“From its Friday release through the close of Sunday, Mario Strikers Charged Football was able to get almost 400,000 connections on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. It was the #3 online game on Nintendo’s network for the entire week, competing with games that have been out the whole week or longer.”

And it’s only been released in Europe, it’s going to be one hell of a summer!

Filed under: Exclusive, Fanboy, Videos — hey_suburbia @ 8:49 pm

So, I got a little bored with Mortal Kombat: Armaggedon today, enjoy!

PS. The Wii-mote motions that everyone is complaining about take about 10 minutes to get used to, suck it up people, they work great.
