PSP

I thought I would write a personal blog, since its so late for me, I just drank some mountain dew, so I can’t fall asleep. Just recently, I bought myself a PSP.

I am ashamed to say that it was a horrible thing to do. I bought the handheld with Burnout Dominator. Now, same with the DS, you get the system and a charger. Then I turn it on, I can’t figure out how to type the nickname in because it requires use of the buttons instead of the Wii and DS’s easy way of just laying out a keyboard for you to scan for letters. Then I start playin my game. I takes forever to load, and then when I get to the screen it tells me I need a Memory stick duo to save data. Unlike how the DS has no loading time and theres no need for a memory anything. As I play the game, I am constantly interupted by loading screens in between races. The sound on the PSP is pretty dissapointing, the DS can produce excellent quality sound in multiple ways (headphone, surround, etc).

After racing, I go back to the home screen to try to use the internet. I like how the internet is set up, I easily connect however I find out that a lot of heavy picture bombarded pages cannot fully load because the PSP “doesn’t have enough memory to support it”. To top that off I can’t view youtube videos, I can’t listen to the SSBB music from todays update, and after awhile of usage some sort of error occurs and my internet surfing is over.

So, after spending 169.99 for the PSP, 39.99 for the game, I’m pretty bummed out. To top this story off, I can’t even save anything because I would need a memory stick duo that costs 30-40 bucks. I was so much happier on Christmas Day when I got my DS.

To conclude this story the DS is so simple to use, theres no loading, and the graphics can be pretty decent too. Nintendo all the way!

(it should also be noted that while the PSP is playing the UMD disc it makes werid noises)

I agree, I’ve used a PSP a few times. I must say that load times are annoying. It’s as if Sony had tried to shove a PS1/2 into a handheld. IMO, it’s too chunky.

I totally agree, I love the idea of the PSP and there are some really cool games for it. But for me its two factors namely the battery life and the loading times.

With the PSP being Jack of all Trades master of none, its main Achilles heal is simply the battery life and that’s directly related to the loading time issues. When your UMD is spinning its obviously sucking battery power and that simply is where SONY has not put enough effort into the PSP.

For the PSP to be more successful, we need to see the PSP redesigned and more effort made in the way of increasing the handheld battery/gameplay life.

I’m also not happy with the amount of PS2 ports to PSP. If you’re a SONY PS2 owner you’re more likely to have already played and own most PSP titles and more importantly they will be far more playable on the PS2 than its handheld counterpart and that’s also partly down to the fact that the PS2 has two analogue sticks and the PSP very stupidly only has one!

It needs more original games like EXIT and Loco Roco…..otherwise I can’t see it competing with the DS.

I think the PSP is a lovely device and with any disc type of system nowadays of course there will be loading times, but you can also fit a lot more information on these discs. But yeah, I agree, the most problematic thing about the PSP is the lack of really good games. There are some but not nearly as many as on the DS and, like stated, the DS is just so much more easy to navigate with thanks to the touchscreen. And it’s more FUN which is what games are about anyway. Nintendo understands that the best out of the “top 3″.

I had a psp, but then I traded it in, all it has is ports of ps2 games mostly
    ipod + ds = better

Yeah, I am amazed at the sound quality on DS… especially with the headphones on.
But you should hear it plugged in to an amp or surround sound! You will never want to play it any other way again.

I’d write another review after you play a few games. We all know some developers work with the hardware better than others. All the points you made turn me off to the device though but I’m not much of a portable devicer to begin with. I usually use CNET to compare electronics but have found a hefty bias in terms of Sony products even when the users ratings are in stark contrast. DS 8.0 to PSP 8.3 plus editors choice Wii 8.0 while PS3 8.8 with a video review! The two biggest consoles in America not getting any love. Always be wary of where you get your news and what to take with a grain of salt.
