Super Smash Bros Dojo Update #58 August 13, 2007

Filed under: News — Max @ 8:23 am

No way! The Pokémon Trainer has finally arrived. And it looks like he doesn’t do his fighting directly.

Instead, he uses the three Pokémon with him—Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard—to do the fighting for him.

The Pokémon Trainer watches from the background.

Is… Is he issuing commands?!

He needs to use his three Pokémon to fight. So the only ones who fight directly are the Pokémon.

I guess you could say using this character is like playing three for the price of one!

And the Pokémon Trainer uses a special move called Pokémon Change to switch between them.

<Down Special Move: Pokémon Change>

Good job, Ivysaur! Come back!

The returning Pokémon tags the next Pokémon.

Charizard! I choose you!

They swap out in a set order: Squirtle→Ivysaur→Charizard.

They all share the same damage meter, so they don’t recover from damage during Pokémon Change. But they also have another stat, which you might call stamina.

If you keep fighting with the same Pokémon, or if you change them out too often, it’s not so good for the Pokémon.

If you want to be a good Pokémon Trainer, you’ll need to learn these kinds of ins and outs.

    3 words: Best Update Ever
4 more words: Sakurai is a Genius

Easily the coolest character that I’ve ever seen. This guy solves the issue of getting the starters in and also adds in a new transforming character like Sheik but this time with THREE people! It also solves the Zelda/Sheik issue where most players only used one person by using the “stamina system” mentioned in the update just below the above.

Overall, awesome update that proves that truly any Nintendo character can make it into Brawl.

  2. Gravatar Wishale Says:

Wow, I wasn’t expecting this one!

I wonder if he transforms into the Pokemon or if he just summons them up and they fight, also if he summons them, does he hide and take damage through hitting the Pokemon, or if you have to dodge the Pokemon and strike him.

Do you guys think this will be a new character, or just someone to fight against in the story mode!

Hmm, Good work Nintendo. Good work.

  3. Gravatar paq Says:

I wonder how he will do in stages like Rumble Falls? I mean, how will he climb? =P It will also be of interest to se where in the background he fits in stages like Lylat Cruise and Bridge of Eldin. Nice update though! =D

It would be awesome if the Pokemons could evolve during battles! =D

    Wishale:
The official Smash Bros. update has a good summary on this. To put it simply, the Pokemon Trainer stands in the background and just yells. You start out with one of the Pokemon on the field. You then fight using that Pokemon which loses “stamina” as it fights (separate number from health bar, no idea how it affects the character) and I’d assume that the PT loses lives when his Pokemon dies. You press Down + B to then switch to a new Pokemon by recalling whoever is inplay and then sending out the next one who is in the following order of: Squirtle —> Ivysaur —> Charizard —> Back to Squirtle.

So, he’s a playable character that is basically the three starter Pokemon all in one. Genius idea by Sakurai and Nintendo.

    paq:
I’ve heard ideas on how he’d work on stages like that. I’d personally like to see him riding on a Pidgeot or something that flies him around. It’d fit the character :p.

It’s all up I was having some problems with the pictures.

  6. Gravatar Rane Says:

I think that character was a good idea. It’ll probably be a hard character to master, because you’ll need to know when to switch between the Pokémon and what to use them for, like Charizard for recovery.

  7. Gravatar Max Says:

    Charizard looks awesome.
I can’t wait to play this game!!!!

  8. Gravatar Joe Says:

LOL! Every single question that Wishale asked was answered in the update’s text and pictures.

Anyway. Great stuff! There’s probably the option of holding A or B before the match so that you can choose which pokemon to play as in the beginning.

  9. Gravatar kevbo Says:

Wow… this game is gonna be crazy… there is going to be sooo much stuff
    happening at the same time…

  10. Gravatar Tux Says:

that was a suprise… anways i like the fact that you can switch between pokemon, although i’d wish the trainer could do more.

  11. Gravatar Pigeon_Feeder Says:

I think there will be a way where you control the trainer…..but at the same time you control the pokemon……oh,and it also looks like the pokemon stadium stages will be brought back…..:)

  12. Gravatar Pigeon_Feeder Says:

Ignore that….I meant that the trainer could possibly be moved and jump…..nothing more than that…….I also wish that the pokemon were all in there final stage…but oh well………and this si the guy that’s supposebly from the original red and blue version…his name’s red..
    …and ya

  13. Gravatar fadecy Says:

    @pigeon_feeder
they couldn’t really do that as venasaur and blastoise are very slow moving, i makes more sense to have 3 pokemon the are quite agile to fit with the game

  14. Gravatar MJ Says:

    Pretty lame.
I say this because Pokemon sucks.

  15. Gravatar SirVenom Says:

This is a cool update. While I am not a big pokemon fan, it should really appeal to Pokemon fans.

  16. Gravatar Matt Says:

Well I basically hate pokemon but it’s still a pretty cool update.

  17. Gravatar Onikokoro Says:

Great more pokemon but were is the best one jigglypuff. They just need to mention her return and I’m set.

  18. Gravatar Hologram Says:

    MJ:
Opinion /= fact. Sorry, but just because you don’t like a series doesn’t make its characters suck nor does it make them useless to include SSBB. I’m not a huge fan of Metal Gear, Earthbound, F-Zero, or Fire Emblem (never had the chance to play any) but I welcome them all in with open arms because they make the game more diverse and fun.

  19. Gravatar SirVenom Says:

I am glad that they announced the return of the Pokeball before this character; everyone would say that this is a conspiracy to get rid of it.

Also, did you notice that the last picture of Squirtle shows him with a blue shell? His shell color must change with costume changes.

  20. Gravatar Max Says:

I agree with you 100% Hologram
and SirVenom I think that’s his tail.(I could be wrong)

  21. Gravatar Pigeon_Feeder Says:

    @fadecy

I could’nt agree more….it’s just I think if they really wanted to,they could some how……..like blastoise would be similar to bowser, and venusaur could be like a bigger, slower pikachu

    @SirVenom

I think that is his tail as well….but when you do a color change,it might just change the trainer…..or it might just be like pikachu and add like a bow to the pokemon…..or maybe it really will change the pokemon…who knows….but oh well

  22. Gravatar SirVenom Says:

    Oh, yup its the tail.

But in color changes, it would have to change the Pokemon colors/headwear too so that you couldn’t confuse it with another Pokemon Trainer on the field too.

  23. Gravatar Pigeon_Feeder Says:

well okay……I’m just really excited bout the game….I bet the next update will be pokemon stadium…..or I could be completely wrong!

  24. Gravatar Mel Says:

yeah since it showed the pokemon stage there i think that will be the next update. Speaking about updates when are they gonna say peach is a playable character we all saw the movie and peach was in it. so just put her in already, it is a waist of an update so just put her in already.
Sorry that i wrote so much and most of it was about peach but forgive me please

  25. Gravatar Roth Says:

So I wonder if Pokemon Trainer is the final name or are there more Pokemon Trainers to choose from (Pokemon Trainer - Red, etc.). I believe Ash Ketchum should be in place of that Pokemon Trainer, since most of us know he’s the main character from the TV series. But from recent games like Battle Revolution, I guess it’s only right to leave it as a mere trainer.

Also, someone mentioned riding on a Pigeot. That would be the actions of a Pokemon Ranger! *hint~

Pokemon Trainer vs. Pokemon Ranger~! \:D/

  26. Gravatar rb Says:

what does the warning challenger approching mean?

  27. Gravatar Onikokoro Says:

to rb in ssbm anytime there is a new character to be unlocked it would say that line and you would fight him and if you won you unlocked him.
