Star Wars The Force Unleashed

LucasArts has revealed that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will come to Wii next spring and you will be able to wield the Wii Remote as a Lightsaber. Now that’s what we’re talking about.

You can wield the Wii Remote as a lightsaber while using the Nunchuk controller to torment others with Force powers(what I wanted from the begging).

The game’s story is set during the era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV A New Hope.

The Wii version, in development by Krome Studios, will also feature an exclusive duel mode in which players can compete head-to-head with their friends. Whether this si online remains to be seen, but we doubt it.

“Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console’s motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life,” said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. “We’ve worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force.”

There are not enough letters in the phrase “HELL YES!!!” to express the hell yes-iness of this announcement.

  2. Gravatar Donnie Says:

LOL “yes-iness” very nice, this should kick major ass if done right, which I think it will be.

  3. Gravatar MJ Says:

Well, do we know if it’s going to be a close 1:1 or more of a you swing left-right, game swings left-right, down-up, etc…

It’s a game I am looking forward to and it being multiplatform, the motion controls will make or break it.

  4. Gravatar Miguel Says:

If this game turns out to be a close 1:1, then….. HELLLLL YESSSSS!!

  5. Gravatar Miguel Says:

    if not……. :(

  6. Gravatar Millennium Says:

Interesting, but I’m skeptical: this is the same studio developing the PS2 and PSP versions. Lame PS2 port confirmed?

  7. Gravatar Donnie Says:

I noticed that it had been slated for other platforms prior to this announcement, does this mean that they will just slap(port) the same game onto a wii disc and add motion controls, or is it a complete workup made specifically for the wii console(graphics, etc..)??

They’d better get this right, or I’ll be one unhappy camper.

  11. Gravatar kevbo Says:

I think this will turn out great and I also think the duel mode will be online but that may just be some optimism on my behalf. Don’t forget them shades BABY!

  12. Gravatar kevbo Says:

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to mention something else.
For awhile I wasn’t even sure if a ‘1:1′ was possible since no games used it and it seemed challenging. Then I played a Half Life 2 mod that allows you to use the Wiimote and nunchuck to play Half Life 2 on your PC. In this he controls the crowbar with a 1:1 ratio with the nunchuck. It works VERY well and is really cool since you can go nutz with the nunchuck and see him go nutz with the crowbar on screen. So I know this is possible but I still think the challenge will be ‘cutting and death’ animations. Since it would be 1:1, you could cut an enemy countless ways which would be impossible to animate them all. So unless you simplify the death animations… also the view will have to be first person since it would again be very hard to create all those animations for the player going crazy with the wiimote. either way around it… this will be challenging…

**anyone with Half Life 2 and a bluetooth enabled PC click below, trust me playing Half Life 2 with the wiimote shows you what is possible and this is only a mod**

    @ Kevbo

If you watch any of the tech demos for Force Unleashed, you will find that the physics in the game are amazing. Glass breaks like glass, wood breaks like wood, jelly jiggles… Anyways, all of it works like real life. I think the “cutting death” animations won’t be a problem.

    It’s about time!

  15. Gravatar Will Says:

This is one of the top announcements I’ve been waiting for. I think secretly the Wii remote was made for lightsaber action. As for death throws, definately think you’re underestimating what is possible nowadays. Check out the many animations in ancient titles like Jedi Knight. General sword sweeps would have general effects that can include a number of dismemberments and typically saber slashing isn’t going to always toss a guys arms. The potential for this title on todays next gen console is the stuff of legend.

  16. Gravatar MJ Says:

@schmete: I hear a lot of that is going out of the window for the Wii version.

  17. Gravatar Madfatman Says:

all i have to say is this: FUCK YES!!!! if they don’t screw this up it will be friggin awesome! pretty much agreeing with everyone else. ;P that and what i’ve seen it’s exciting, it’s been a long while since i’ve been excited for a friggin game! that and the animation on it (from what i’ve seen) is awesome!

  21. Gravatar Patch Says:

Is this a definite? Because I was just visiting gamestop.com and they have a listing for this game for both the PS3 and the X-Box 360 but no Wii listing. According to them it comes out April 8th.

  22. Gravatar josh Says:

This is going to be great for the Wii, i just cant wait until they bring out more rpg or another zelda for it to!

  23. Gravatar josh Says:

and i hope that they bring out a really sweet pokemon rpg for the Wii. Now i would like that!

  24. Gravatar mason Says:

this game is y i bought a wii the moment I took out the wii motes I said can’t wait till they make star wars for wii. With the next gen consoles i doubt cutting deaths will be a problem. Nintendo has been waiting for this game and they wont let any 1 fuk it up

  26. Gravatar George Says:

To play the devils advocate… the only gameplay footage that is out is on the 360 and maybe PS3. taking the gameplay out of the equation I think we can all accept the fact that the 360 and th PS3 kick the wii’s ass in graphics. Also, although awesome, the wii doesn’t have a lot of buttons so how will they do all of the “insane combos” without the aid of them. Lastly can the wii handle DMM and Euphoria? The 360 has dual super processors or some crap like that and the PS3 has like a billion of those and with the galaxy being so huge could the wii handle all of the memory (no large hard drive) and processing? I have to say though that if the wiimote had good saber controls that could actually block lasers and block other saber slashes depending on where you put your wiimote it could possibly be the greatest game ever. and after Halo 3 is the wii still winning the console wars? probably but just wondering. I think halo 3 is just another shooter but apparently not. Long Live the Wii!

  27. Gravatar EvilPsycho Says:

the wii will inovate the entire market if this turns out, hundreds of medieval war games could follow, if you dont have a wii u suck.

  28. Gravatar julio Says:

listen i was on the official website and saw no wii sign on the place where it shows the platforms and i was going to buy a PS3 becaue of that so dont ruin this fun for us

  29. Gravatar AJR3 Says:

The Wii Tag is not on the official Force Unleashed Website, but the fact that Force Unleashed will be on the wii is on the Lucas Arts site (http://www.lucasarts.com/company/release/news20070918a.html).

How bad could the graphics actually get? Even though graphics aren’t the strongpoint of the wii, the Wii is still a next gen console.

  30. Gravatar Kehool Says:

    @george

i wouldn’t worry about the combinations and the amount of buttons
after all the wiimote and nunchuck were made for movement aswell as button pressing

Alsp with a line up like SW: Force Unleashed, SSBB, Spore and Mario Kart all coming out this yr… its gonna be kickin major ass by ‘09.

  33. Gravatar zaac Says:

i have one question, and one question only. and yet, this one question almost has almost driven me mad for this one question could determine weather i by force unleashed for wii. and i shall hunt until i find the answer.

If your using the wii remote for the lightsaber and the nunchuck for the force… then pray tell, how the hell are you going to move your character!?!? I will answere part of that, however it isn’t my TRUE question, and the answeres are obvious to amost anyone.

1: you use the nunchusk’s joystick. “this is definatly the way i hope it goes! however… i’m afraid that it might be the fact that the joystick controls where -or at who- you direct the force.

2: you use the pad on the remote (this would me terrible for most! using the pad is anoying. and its not always easy to control where your character is moving. it also results in pianfull friction for your thumb after a time.

3: your character moves on its own. (this of course is the least likely, and worst of the three choices.)

I’m praying with my whole heart that you use the joy-stick and not the pad… but i have my doubts…. anyone know for sure?

  34. Gravatar orion016 Says:

O.K. I wasn’t Sure if i was going to buy a Wii I was toying around not getting it because this was the game that i really wanted but now that it has it on it, this is my OFFICIAL HELL YEA…. for the Nintendo Wii…….

  35. Gravatar keridel Says:

ik in answer to zaaac’s query, of course you’ll use the nunchuck to move but you’ll use it for force powers too. for example you move forward by pressing up on the joystick then hold Z and pull in causing the storm trooper to be sucked towards you where you then use the wiimotesaber to decapitate him (i have thought about this you can tell)

And i agree with the first post the hell yes-iness is of the scale!!

  36. Gravatar George Says:

okay Ill be getting it for the wii but what about DMM and Euphoria which is the big new thing, can anyone confirm that there will be these programs? thanks

  37. Gravatar ThisGuy Says:

You guys are all going to be sorely disapointed. As much as I want this game to bring the awesome, it wont. There is no euphoria system nor is there DMM on the Wii. And those two new technologies are what the hype of this game is all about. Guess we shoulda bought an Xbox 360.

  38. Gravatar alex Says:

    @ThisGuy

yeah i just found this out to, i think ill just wait for my freind to buy it for his 360 and i’ll play it at his house.

im not paying 50 bucks for half a game, the wii version is just way to dumbed down, its probably just a port of the psp version with slapped on motion controls and that = garbage!!!

  39. Gravatar redneckid Says:

c’mon thisguy you get to use your own lightsaber i mean really id cut my own toe off (with a lightsaber) for one swing let alone sacrifice a little AI buy it for 360 too (or rent) if you really need all the new tech but dont deny your desire for Light-energy Melee. hell yes-iness!!

  40. Gravatar ThisGuy Says:

Look the reason I say that is because the only hype this game has had for months and months is the new technologies being introduced with this game. DMM and Euphoria. The game is just not nearly as appealing without Euphoria and DMM, those two techs are what seperate this game from all the others. Thus that is why there is so much hype revolving around those. Take those away and what is left? Half a game, that is not going to be anything speical. And sorry to say it guys, but if wagging a wiimote is all that it takes to make a game fun, then you are a sad lot of people. (Please note that the only system I own is a wii.)

  41. Gravatar keridel Says:

i think thisguy is missing the point somewhat here. We here are not just wii fans we are STAR WARS fans!! we don’t care that you won’t have “wood that breaks like real wood” cause it’s not real wood, we don’t care that the Ai won’t “behave like real people” who wants that??? real people are dull! we want to get a light saber and hack people up with it BECAUSE IT’S A LIGHTSABER! BECAUSE IT’S STAR WARS!!!

Be that as it may i have heard that It won’t be 1:1 movement but it will have a left thrust a right thrust and up and a down, an in and an out. all based on your movement so it won’t be another crappy red steel but it won’t be perfect either!! suprise suprise show me a game that is bar mario kart and Final fantasy 8!!

  42. Gravatar ThisGuy Says:

Umm, actually I don’t think I missed the point at all. Obviously everyone here is a fan of starwars. Otherwise nobody would be wasting their time here. And that is all the more reason why I, and everyone else should want a good, and complete, starwars title, not some half game that they are making just to maximize their profits by putting it out on every consol. I especially dont want a game that doesn’t have Euphoria or DMM, when right now those are the only selling points. I mean its the FORCE unleased. not the lightsaber unleased.
And actually keridel, I think most people would disagree with what you said about not wanting DMM and Euphoria. Your arguments against it are pretty feeble, and a little bit pathetic. Maybe you should get out more? Oh and by the way, more realistic A.I. would only make it that much more fun to hack people to death with a lightsaber.

  43. Gravatar keridel Says:

well let’s not degenerate into verbal abuse shall we? i can see what you saying i really can but it’s not going to have no ai and no physics engine it’ll merely be a normal amount of ai and physics which was good enough for every game ever made before. the wii is NOT next gen. next gen comes from the term for the 3rd generation graphics and processors neither of which the wii has. you cannot expect it to be able to have that amount of ai and still run at a decent rate. thats just obvious.

  44. Gravatar ThisGuy Says:

Thats not the point. The point is that this game has DMM and Euphoria going for it. Those are the main attractions, those are the features that make this game what it is. Example… I recently bought MLB 2k8 for the wii. It was made for both the xbox 360 and the PS3. But like the version of unleashed for wii, MLB 2k8 was dummed down, and mostly stripped of what makes the game what it is. On top of that, the game has major glitches. By major gliches I mean, franchise mode is good for one year of regular season play. Playoffs are reduced to single elemination games. All other years played after the first season are only 15 games long. (No matter the settings you choose). Not to mention the slapped on motion sensors adapted for wii play. And as sad as I am to admit this, but I see that Unleashed will be no different than MLB 2k8. Unleashed will be stripped of its greatness, and will have slapped on controls, and is only being put onto the wii so that Lucas can maximize his profits.

  45. Gravatar keridel Says:

now that is a clearer statement than the last. you worry we’ll get a port. that’s my worry too. resident evil wii edition is the same, it’s the ps2 game with badly dubbed motion controls.

I agree with you that this is the likely hood. however i’m hoping beyond hope that lucas arts will have realised that this game could easily be THE greatest star wars game ever if they do it right and re-instate my previous HELL YESS-INESS factor.

And i don’t think it will be stripped of gameplay items only fancy looks and brains and you have to admit the duel sounds awesome!

  46. Gravatar doopy Says:

keridel, the wii version of resident evil 4 had perfect controls, the IR aiming was absolubtely dead on.

  47. Gravatar keridel Says:

i’m talking about the whole “wiggle the joystick to do tasks” and the ir was very good however i don’t like the fact it doesn’t move the screen when you move to the side but then i am used to used to the pc which is excellent for screen movement. and with the big title of “wii EDITION!” i was expecting something new but it was the exact same game as the ps2. exactly!!

  48. Gravatar Queerino Says:

Okay, I’m no nerd but I’m going to get anal about this. Now the focus on this particular console seems to be the incorporation of the wiimote and nunchuck in combat while Xbox360 and PS2’s focus seems to be on the three engines that will probably make the game so revolutionary. I’m wondering if Lucas Arts are patronizing nintendo fans with a mediocre version of the game. The very concept of the Force Unleashed is an experience in itself, and if I can’t experience this masterpiece to it’s fullest visually then I will not experience it at all. And if it is the case that the Wii version does not have DMM, Euphoria and Havok then I had better get me a 360.

  49. Gravatar Keridel Says:

Well hows this for a compromise. i have both the 360 and a wii so i will buy it for both and tell you guys which is the more fun :)

  50. Gravatar Queerino Says:

I love Nintendo; I love the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy was brilliant a game, so was Twighlight Princess and Metroid Prime 3; the incorporation of the Wiimote in game play was surprisingly easy and for this “port” would be a fantastic experience. The moment Wii was introduced to the world via press release the thought of a lightsaber battle played out by gaming nerds entertained my mind. And alone this ported version will be amusing, maybe even a revelation for Wii’s gamers, but it will taste bitter, because I know that at the cost of some funky physical action I will have a mediocre ported game while a brilliant jewel of a game is out there being played by the lucky wealthy bitches that turn their noses at the Wii. I don’t wanna think about the poor queens who play PSP, PS2 and DS versions.

  51. Gravatar Liam Says:

I’ve currently got a wii (gettin xbox next then ps3) and i think personally although graphics are yeah immense, its more of what you do in the game that matters, been playing lego starwars this week, and although the graphics are sumwat gud (how good can it b with lego bricks) i was more interested in how it plays out and actually fighting, figuring out where to go etc. i found red steel amazin when fighting, and can you actually expect a few hundred £ to get you a machine that can identify exactly how u swing and at what angle you are aiming for at the TV?

  52. Gravatar Queerino Says:

Redsteel handled horrifically: the motions were clumsy, the graphics were poor as was the story line. Redsteel is a bad experiment corrected by Metroid Prime 3. But Redsteel was a premier pilot game for that console and I have a feeling Wii were resilliant but practical about releasing it. And it wasn’t as built up as Force Unleashed is, how can you introduce Redsteel as a game in the same league? So maybe I’m not so pissed at Lucas Arts for watering down the game for PS2, PSP and Wii: the only thing I want to see on the level on Wii is the cinematics, they looked really good and I hope they don’t pay the price for the lesser quality of the Wii, PS2 and PSP.

  53. Gravatar Ruman Says:

Sure, DMM and Euphoria have been the source of hype since the game was announced, but motion-controlled lightsabers have been a source of hype since the Wii was announced. And it’s not a port; Krome Studios is making closely identical PSP, PS2 and Wii versions, but none of them are ports of any of the others. They’re all being individually worked up. And even though there are none of the new physics engines for these systems, the developers are pushing them to the absolute limits graphically. I, personally, find “you can literally slice people’s heads off and telekinetically send them flying across the room” more appealing than “realistically breaking wood and enemies that grab onto stuff in midair”.

  54. Gravatar Aristarchus Says:

DMM and Euphoria can go to heck. The Wii version has PvP lightsaber duels. Sweeeeet.

    Graphics… meh. Gameplay rules.

  55. Gravatar Queerino Says:

I bought Force Unleashed for Wii, I finished it in 6 hours, the cutscenes were shit, the gameplay was shit, the light saber control was shit, the graphics were shit, the dialogue was shit, the sountrack was shit, this was a shit game. I want my money back.
