Major League Eating: WiiWare Exclusive

Filed under: First Look, News, WiiWare — hey_suburbia @ 6:22 pm

Major League Eating wiiware

Video game publisher Mastiff announced today that their upcoming title, Major League Eating: The Game, will makes its debut as an exclusive on WiiWare, Nintendo’s new downloadable game service for the Wii, which launches May 12 in North America. The game will make extensive use of the Wii Remote to simulate the fast and furious action of a professional eating competition.

“Watching Major League Eating is like watching poetry in motion,” says Bill Swartz, Head Woof at Mastiff. “Professional gurgitators have the grace of ballerinas yet the brute strength, mental focus, and intestinal fortitude to push their bodies and minds as hard as athletes in any other extreme endurance sport. Victory is sweet and defeat can be well, really, really messy. It’s an experience we’re proud to help bring into the home.”

The game features the world’s greatest gurgitory athletes competing across a variety of foods and venues. Built much like a classic fighting game and deeper than a Chicago style deep-dish pizza, MLE: The Game requires players to master a smorgasbord of offensive and defensive weapons including bites, burps, belches, mustard gas and jalapeo flames while cramming and chewing food at a world-class pace. It’s not for the faint of heart, the slow of reflex, or those with an overly strong aversion to a Technicolor reversal of fortune.

Major League Eating: The Game uses the Wii Remote to simulate a variety of eating techniques including the cram, toss, and ‘typewriter.’ Burp-offs and Hot Potato challenges during the contests keep the competition intense and eaters on their toes.

Major League Eating: The Game is for one or two players, offers online play and a leader board.

Major League Eating, the professional league which oversees all top eating events in the nation, including the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, counts among its members Takeru Kobayashi, the Japanese eating phenomenon, and American Joey Chestnut, current champion of the world.

Wired’s Lego Batman impressions

Lego Batman

Do you remember the joy you felt the first time you saw Batman? Can you recall the smile that stretched across your face as you read that comic book, watched the campy TV show starring Adam West, or viewed either the dark and brooding Tim Burton film, or the magnificent Dark Knight Returns? Do you remember thinking, above all else, that this superhero, flawed and fallible though he might be, was above all else, wicked cool?

That’s how Lego Batman makes you feel.

NO (free typing) text chat in Mario Kart Wii

mario kart wii chat

I guess Nintendo is once again playing it safe by not allowing angry gamers to write to other possible pre-pubescent gamers with such phrases as:

“U sux at MK, Noobz.  I ownd U, go practice till U R L33t like me, a$$Fu*k”

Instead, Nintendo opted for pre-written text that you can send (like in Madden ‘08).  I find it really hard for an online games in 2008 not to have a way to communicate with each other.  I think a real simple solution to this would be to have 18+ rooms, private rooms, or other designated rooms that allowed text/voice chat.  While other public rooms kept it to pre-written responses.  Also, if a parent was concerned about their child receiving x-rated messages, couldn’t they set the parental controls or monitor their child?  The 10 year old will just go onto a Mario Kart Wii forum after the race and be open to the wild antics of forum members anyway, wtf…

During WiiNintendo’s Medal of Honor gaming night, we had to set up a IRC room just to communicate with each other, why bring that much hassle to the gamer when the technology is, not only available, but most likely in it’s prime (few bugs, flawless integration, etc…).

It seems it’s almost the opposite of what an online game should be.  Before ANYTHING there should be communication.
