Gamespot Iron Man Review May 16, 2008

Filed under: News, Reviews — BradDelo @ 10:14 pm

The Good

  • Flying at high speeds
  • Mowing down soldiers with your Gatling gun.

The Bad

  • Dull, unengaging combat
  • Blurry, sad visuals
  • Makes being a wealthy playboy genius in a superpowered flight suit seem boring.

5.0 = Mediocre

SOURCE

Held captive in a cave by soldiers armed to the teeth with weapons of his own design, Tony Stark ponders his fate. Faced with the ugly truth about the world he has helped create, he resolves to turn his genius to other purposes. Stark constructs a high-tech suit of armor and becomes Iron Man, embarking on a quest to ferret out the evil fueled by his creations and salvage his shameful family legacy. Iron Man, a game recently released in conjunction with the feature film, parallels Tony Stark’s plight. Born in the dark, dismal cave of movie-based video games, Iron Man tries to construct an armored suit of exciting third-person action that will capture the speed and power of being Iron Man. Unfortunately, it’s all the game can do to muster a few low-altitude thrills over the course of this ho-hum adventure.

Iron Man begins in the cave where Tony Stark constructs the rudimentary rough draft of what will evolve into the iconic hot-rod red and gold suit. After his escape, the plot diverges from that of the movie, following similar themes while pitting Iron Man against a host of enemies that fans may recognize from the comics. Levels are bookended by cinematic cutscenes that generally show a little bit of character interaction and then a lot of Iron Man flying hither and yon. Only Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard have lent their voices and likenesses to the game, and their performances, like the cutscenes themselves, are adequate.

Actual combat is a different story. Iron Man’s foes, though quite numerous, are not very mobile, skilled, or motivated. Soldiers, trucks, tanks, and helicopters alike are quite content to hang out in one spot while shooting at you until you’ve got a moment to pop over and blast them. Your repulsors and rockets will get you through most of the game, but you’ll want to bust out your Gatling gun on any and all soldiers and mow them down while resisting the urge to cackle with glee. On the few occasions that you do succumb to enemy fire, you’ll have the chance to self-defibrillate with a brief, timed button-press challenge. If you succeed, you’re back in the battle with no consequence; if you fail, you’ll lose one backup power cell. Losing all your backup cells will result in failure of the mission, but Iron Man is so hardy and the self-defibrillation is so easy that you’ll have a tough time dying. (more…)

WiiNintendo RV Roadtrip - Across America

Hey guys, just to let you know, I’ll be hitting the road for two weeks. My mom is getting re-married in San Diego next week, so my Wife, our two pugs, my sister, my brother-in-law, and my 3 little nephews are renting an RV and crusin’ America for 2 weeks.

I started my Wii Fit Experiment last week and I’m going to continue to do so during our road trip. We’re bringing the Wii and a TV, it’s going to be insane. I’ll get some footage working out in front of Mt. Rushmore, Chicago, Moab Desert, San Francisco, LA, Dallas, etc.. Should be fun.

CBS News got wind of me being one of the people to receive a Wii Fit and came to my house today and shot a story that they’re going to air Monday during Wii Fit’s launch. So, if your in the Philadelphia CBS viewing area, check out CBS 3’s news report on me and the Wii Fit this Monday, not sure what news hour it will air.

I’m also proud to say that after a week of the Wii Fit Experiment, I’m seeing some REAL positive changes, I’ll keep things quite until the experiment is over.

Here is the breakdown of our route:

If you’re along our route send me an email and maybe we can meet up and play some Wii Fit or any other Wii game (I’m bringing my whole collection 60+), info@WiiNintendo.net. I’ll have my laptop and login on whenever I have WiFi, I also have an iPhone to check my mail.

Also, note to bloggers. Please try to post a little more than normal, I may not be able to keep up on everything Wii for the next two weeks, so try and keep the site up and running. I’m recieving a bunch of awesome Wii accessories from Total Console and will hook up the top bloggers of the next two weeks.

Ok, I’m out!

My first 30 min. w/ We Ski on the Wii Fit Balance Board!

Filed under: Exclusive, First Look — hey_suburbia @ 12:18 pm

My first 30 min. w/ We Ski (direct feed) and video of me playing We Ski with the Wii Fit Balance Board over top the footage. The footage goes out of sync in some spots, but you get the idea.

I do have to say that this game controls amazingly well with the Wii Fit balance board. It didn’t feel like something they just tacked on at the last minute. The skier controlled even better than the slalom game in Wii Fit. You’ll notice that under the skier you’ll see a bar showing where your weight is shifting.

The video above is my very first time playing, I played solely with the Wii Fit balance board, so you’ll notice a slight learning curve, I’ve gotten a lot better since I filmed that.

Pop (Wiiware) Review May 14, 2008

Review By Trist
Wiiware (700 Wii Points)- Developed by: Nooooooo!
Puzzle- Rated E for Everyone (ESRB)

A debut Wiiware title, does it have what it takes to be worth its weight in gold?

Pop is definitely one of my favorite games of late as it is madly addictive. Who knew that popping bubbles could turn into hours upon hours of madness?

Pop is a simple game that revolves around players pointing their Wii cursor at the screen and pressing the A or B button in an attempt to pop as many bubbles as possible. The player can tackle through several modes of gameplay (Normal, Advanced, Chill, and multiplayer versions of these modes), and compete for their mark on the Worldwide Leadership Boards.

Pop is a simple game to grasp and will truly be enjoyable to people of all ages. Although it is simple, there are several complex elements within. The first is the bubble chaining system in which the player can choose to pop bubbles of the same color in order to score a multiplayer and gain tons of points. There are power-ups as well that can affect the gameplay. Power-ups can affect the time that is required to survive. The takes place through a series of waves. Each wave usually will feature a different color of bubbles, background, music, speed, and direction of bubbles. Players lose when the clock reaches 0 or a negative number (for example if the timer is low and there is a chain of “nukes” and “skulls” then the skulls will continue to deduct time and even go to negative time, which is weird).

Bloody action game, Mad World, confirmed for Wii

A trailer for the game leaked onto the Interweb just yesterday, and now we learn via Famitsu magazine that Platinum Games is developing a brand new action title for the Nintendo Wii entitled Mad World. Head inside for the first details on this, and of the other key announcements published in this week’s issue of the Japanese gaming bible.

Mad World, developed by Platinum Games is set within a colorless world of black and white. In fact, the only other shade on show is red, saved for the blood spilt by fallen enemies. Described as a mixture of “cheerful violence” and a “curb brawler”, the title is being directed by Shigenori Nishikawa (credited previously in the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis series’). As of now, there is no official release date.

Family Trainer, info, screens, video May 13, 2008

Filed under: First Look, Videos — hey_suburbia @ 11:00 pm

The game includes the specially designed Family Trainer mat controller which, when combined with the Wii Remote, lets players get totally physical in a series of crazed challenges. Unlike other games for the Wii which only focus on the arms, Family Trainer gets the feet involved too for total body gameplay. Simple controls and intuitive play make the game easy to just pick up and play, and let players of any age get involved, get physical and have maximum fun.

There are over a dozen frantic single and multiplayer challenges to choose from all based on outdoor challenges amusingly interpreted for the world of Family Trainer, such as river rafting, mine karting, log jumping, rope skipping and much more. The activities take place in a variety of colourful locations including jungle forests full of ancient ruins, a haunted mansion complete with hordes of zombies, and a fairytale world where riding on toys and floating amongst the clouds is the order of the day.

Players can challenge friends or family members on the same mat, or cooperate together, for example trying to balance a runaway mine kart as it hurtles round a gravity defying track. Players can track their progress and set new records for their friends and family to beat, bringing a dose of healthy competition into the madcap mix.

New screens and video from EA’s Skate

Filed under: Exclusive, First Look, Videos — hey_suburbia @ 10:34 pm

Prepare to experience a new kind of skateboarding game as Electronic Arts reintroduces last year’s Skate title with a new spin off on the Nintendo Wii and DS platforms. Entitled Skate It, the game will make use of the innovative controls from both platforms and integrate it with the intuitive FlickIt control system from the previous title.

While it may not be considered as a direct sequel of the first Skate game, Skate It does provide the same kind of hardcore skateboarding action with its own unique spin integrated into its intuitive control system.
